Codgers Mountain Bike Park
Codgers MTB park – 10 minute ride from Harbourside Nelson. Where it all started. A purpose-built network of flow trails and technical lines right on the backdoor of Nelson, ideal for short sessions or spend the whole day exploring. Everything from national enduro runs to laps for the nippers. Classics include Firball and Turners flow tracks (Grades 3-4), Hotbox and Top Dog (Grade 5), DiVAS and Smasher (Grade 6).
Codgers is also the start of the ride up to Te Ara Koa (Grade 5) featuring 750m descent of rocky, rooty Nelson goodness through beautiful native beech forest – a locals favourite (shuttles available). Finish your session with a cold craft hazy IPA at the Freehouse in town.

Dun Mountain (Coppermine) Trail
Coppermine Trail – 15 minute ride from Harbourside Nelson. One of New Zealand’s classic backcountry routes. Be in the back of beyond inside an hour from your accommodation with Tuis and Bellbirds from the local bird sanctuary keeping you company. A 4-6 hr loop following an historic mining rail trail on an sweet as gradient climbing through native bush. Tops out with big views over Tasman Bay and the Richmond Ranges, then an awesome grade 3 singletrack downhill back to Nelson. Great as a day mission with friends or family. A truly epic ride! Starts from Codgers.

Sharlands Creek
Sharlands Creek MTB park – 20 minute easy ride from Harbourside Nelson. Popular intermediate and advanced trails connecting to Codgers across the Maitai valley and forming part of Nelson’s extensive riding network. Has a range of solid runs such as Kaka (Grade 6), Keyboard Warrior (Grade 5), Aorere (Grade 6). There’s a quality pump track at the bottom of the hill if you need to practice your cornering or hit some doubles.
Silvan
Silvan MTB park – 10 minute drive from Harbourside Nelson. Silvan has a ton of intermediate riding, slanted towards technical singletrack. A solid climb up Alpha takes you to to sweeping views over Tasman Bay from the top of Saxton Hill. Then point down hill for a taste of some of our favourites including Peoples Choice, Exodus and Hare Down (Grades 3-4) and de la Luna (Grade 5). Silvan also has a great jump track if you need to send it with the local kids.
Cable Bay
Cable Bay bike park – 15 minute drive from Harbourside Nelson. After you’ve crushed the Gorge, Cable Bay beckons. Yet another top class bike park with a huge network of technical riding is waiting to be discovered. Geared towards experienced riders, there’s a feast of steep, technical lines through a mix of pine forrest and regenerating native. And if you still need one more short of adrenaline, there’s always the Skywire – possibly the worlds longest flying fox.

Mountain Biking the Wairau Gorge Nelson
Kaiteriteri
Kaiteriteri – 50 minute drive from Harbourside Nelson. Kaiteri has a great mix of flow and technical trails. The unique Golden Bay sandy granite loam surface offers something different to typical Nelson trails. Great draining for when there’s a bit of moisture around. Tracks are softer and more flowy but there’s still plenty of tech singletrack for those that need it – there’s something for everyone. Finish with a swim at the world famous Kaiteriteri beach and an icecream from the campground store.
Classic Multi-Day Backcountry Rides Further Afield
Nelson is the starting point for the Top of the South Island’s multi-day backcountry epics, including the Heaphy Track, Old Ghost Road, St James and the Paparoa Trail. We’ve ridden them all – multiple times – and can say with hand on heart that you MUST add them to your bucket list if you haven’t already.
